Deadly shooting at Martinsville party

On Behalf of | Nov 3, 2020 | Criminal defense |

Alcohol and large groups of people seldom have positive outcomes. Alcohol tends to take our social filter away, and as alcohol levels rise, often so do tempers. This, in turn, can lead to fights and sometimes, shootings. This is, unfortunately, the alleged case at a recent local, Martinsville party.

The shooting

A young 20-something from Martinsville died at an area hospital this past Sunday. According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the man died after being shot at a party due to an argument. HCSO alleges that they responded after midnight to a Rose Lane party, but the person who was allegedly shot was already being transferred to the SOVAH Martinsville E.R. This was also where the young man was declared dead.

The accused

HCSO claims that another local who attended the Rose Lane party got into an argument with the deceased, shot him and then fled the scene. He now faces first-degree murder charges, along with a charge for the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was also denied bail, and is still in custody at the Henry County Jail.

The options, post-arrest

So far, the reports do not indicate the level of evidence against the accused or how that evidence was obtain. These facts could be extremely important to the accused because we are all innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This means that the amount of evidence against the accused could lead to the dropping or lowering of charges. In addition, if the evidence was inappropriately gathered, that evidence could be thrown out of court, which could also lead to the reduction or dismissal of charges.

The key though is to contact a Warrenton, Virginia, attorney immediately. The attorney can investigate the investigators to ensure that one’s rights have been protected because everyone is entitled to a vigorous defense.
